What does Chris’s love of exploring cities and architecture have to do with one another? At first it might seem obvious, and yes the buildings that make up the city are fascinating. However, it is how everything comes together that is truly captivating -- the textures, the neighborhood charm and identities, the stories that are told, the history. For Chris, simply getting lost in a new city is much better than any book or movie. Walking through a city is a reminder that life and architecture are inseparable; we engage with architecture daily whether we think about it or not. Architecture, at its best, has the power to shape your experience, connect you to something greater or simply tell a great story; that is what Chris loves about architecture. At emersion DESIGN, Chris enjoys biking to work every day, engaging with creative thinkers here at emersion, and tackling design challenges.

Blessed with a family that loved to travel. Christie’s family traveled to every state except Alaska before she went off to college. Having conquered her 50th state 2 summers ago with her husband and 2 daughters, she began to realize that it was trips like these that inspired her career path. Taking advice from nature, Christie has documented her inspiration: Advice from a hot spring to an architect: Why do “earth tones” suggest muted colors? Am I not of the earth? Advice from the forest to an architect: Don't forget that light can be a building material. Protect the creatures that call it home. Don’t forget your roots. Advice from a mountain to an architect: Strive to give your visitors a sense of Awe. Take people to new heights. Provide inspiring Views. Advice from a dandelion to an architect: Wake a wish for those who cannot imagine. Dream for those who live in nightmares. Believe for those who have lost hope. Celebrate the little things. Don’t forget to blow the seeds of your creative spirit . And spread the joy.

What is ‘spare time’ to Dan? An unknown, mythical creature. With 4 boys, there is no such thing as spare time. But when he gets it in the form of a vacation, what does he do? Body surfing with his 4 boys is one of the many things that Dan can spend all day doing. It amazes him how relaxing, fun, yet aggressive the ocean can be. What also amazes him is the collaborative exercise of Architecture. Not only with colleagues in the office, but also with clients, consultants, contractors, manufacturer’s rep, and regulatory bodies. Dan thoroughly enjoys those he works with, and the incredible variety of tasks and experiences each day at emersion DESIGN!

Michael enjoys the art and science of problem solving. He believes the word “problem” should not be viewed negatively but rather the reason we are able to discover new opportunities and creations. When he is not at work, you can find him renovating his 1922 bungalow or camping with his family. Since he can remember, he has had a passion for breathing new life into antiquated and neglected things. Mike also feels a strong connection to the outdoors. Growing up near a 300-acre nature preserve heavily influenced his interests in both landscape architecture and environmental science.

Is this something you think you can do? That was the question Bryant faced when first asked to join emersion DESIGN. After years of HVAC design and drafting, Bryant’s love for tinkering with electronics and helping people with software and computer issues gave others the insight to see that his skills went beyond his HVAC savvy. It never occurred to Bryant that his love for electronics and technology would transform into something he could do as an IT professional. Bryant’s patience, intellect, dedication and work ethic is key to the ongoing daily operation of emersion DESIGN. Every day. Love your work and you never work a day in your life.

One might ask “What does designing plumbing systems and being an elite CAD/BIM systems troubleshooter over the span of 25 years have to do with grilling?” Patience. I’ve learned over time it takes quite a bit of patience to do both. Come by the house on any given weekend during the spring, summer or fall and you might find me on the deck enjoying one of my favorite past times; preparing a meal on the grill or smoker (charcoal, not gas). Nothing says patience more than babysitting a grill and waiting for the perfect time to take something off or turn it.

"What do I want to be when I grow up?" Roger would joke that he is still trying to figure that out. The truth is that he has been passionate about architecture since 7th grade when he shared some of his pencil renderings (done from memory of the 65-66 NYC World’s Fair) with his teacher. He encouraged him to pursue every educational opportunity available…and Roger did. Roger became an architect in 1986, but is still the same kid who loves to figure things out. He enjoys solving the puzzle of how to take an idea, a design sketch, and turn it into a build-able solution. Roger brings that passion for problem solving and architecture, a knack for creative solutions, and his great sense of humor to his work at emersion DESIGN.

Chad strives to use his strengths to be the best steward he can be to the people, organizations, community and earth with which he is blessed to be engaged. Two things come to mind when you ask Andrew what he enjoys: technology and modeling. From Ball State’s Institute for Digital Fabrication to the University of Cincinnati’s Rapid Prototyping Center, his ambition to investigate the role that technology has on Architecture has led him to observe how it affects cultural and social issues. Engaged in this ‘tech’ and ‘techne’ of Architecture, Andrew used the latest digital design tools to produce experimental physical constructs that led him to his love of physical modeling.

What does how you stand have to do with how you work? Amy has a “tiny” obsession with whole body alignment and is constantly looking for ways to include her alignment studies and her passion for interior design. Amy’s oldest child is beginning school this year which has led her to a flurry of research on how alignment, movement, and focus intersect in the classroom and affect young children. In client meetings, hearing the complaints of pain and discomfort, her wheels start spinning with furniture and space solutions that allow for more movement throughout the day. Whole body wellness is just as much about how often you use your body as it is about the way you use your body. She wants her clients to be able their body better – to feel better. She’ll change the world one standing-desk at a time!

What does a love for wine making have to do with Architecture? Maybe nothing, or maybe everything. A good wine is created to be enjoyed, but highly technical to produce, requiring great attention to detail. Alan is passionate about his wine making which he started in High School, at one time even growing his own grapes. Every year he fine tunes his skills, constantly pursuing that perfect glass of wine. Alan, President of emersion DESIGN, co-founded the company after being an Architect for nearly 20 years. If you asked him, he would tell you he is a nuts and bolts guy, detail oriented. He is passionate about providing spaces for clients that meet all the technical points but also the aesthetic ones. His experience, in life and architecture, helps lead emersion DESIGN to provide spaces that meet all the design criteria and are also thoughtful, satisfying to experience and can be appreciated, much like a fine glass of wine.

In a world of increasing complexity and scale, we cannot forget that it is the details that make it all possible. Michael has always been detail-oriented and it started early with never ending questions of how anything and everything around us works. These questions continue to this day and help drive his design process; allowing a team to identify client and project goals in order to deliver solutions that are on-time and on-budget. Michael’s love for the details doesn’t stop at work, with many hours spent tinkering with electronics and exploring our rapidly changing world. He also enjoys staying active through athletics, such as soccer and biking, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.

Steve is always up for a challenge. This is why he chose to go into such a technical field, as with Structural Engineering, and work alongside architects. When Steve is not running calculations to make buildings stand up or detailing a moment connection, he also puts himself through different challenges, such as: going to the gym and staring at himself in the mirror, keeping his yard and landscape perfect, and putting his car near the top of the “very important in life” list. Did I mention he is not normal! Besides being a contractor’s best friend, normalcy and being an engineer also go “hand-in-hand”. Any expectations from the rest of the world to be normal, should be quite limited. On a more serious note, Steve loves what he does and he enjoys doing alongside everyone at emersion DESIGN.

Do you believe in magic? When you watch a professional magician are you in awe of what they can do? Magic is a hobby and love of Mark's. When he sees a skilled magician perform, he applauds not only the trick, but his/her ability to transform a simple illusion into total wonder for the audience. To Mark, the “patter” and performance is as good if not better than the illusion itself. Architecture and Architects do the same when they are asked to design a structure for a client. Anyone can build a box with a roof, but an Architect transforms the box into something that inspires whoever comes in contact with the building, be it the owner, the tenant, the visitor or passerby. The building can then uplift and inspire that individual in his or her life. This is why Mark is an Architect. To move people and make the world better through architecture. This is why he’s at emersion DESIGN.
