What Moves You? BOLD FUSION!

Last week, HYPE inspired young professionals during their 11th BOLD FUSION. This year’s slogan of Ready to Move forced all of us to get out of our seats and learn ballet, stretch our bodies with ergonomic bands and compete in a decathlon. It’s a beautiful thing to see 800+ attendees have their internal fire reignited.

Prefabrication I

The predictable conditions of the factory floor can increase quality, speed, and safety, and coordinated fabrication can decrease construction waste and cost. Check out SHoP architect’s Mulberry Street project and note the similarities between their prefabricated masonry panels and Gramazio & Kohler’s brickwork studies. In these conditions, I really see the potential for digital fabrication be a game changer.

Prefabrication II

This brick wall by Gramazio and Kohler is a great example of how a robotic arm can be used. A robot rotates each row of bricks a fractional amount to make the wall self supporting. An unreasonable task to ask of a human bricklayer, but with the robot it becomes practical. Digital fabrication can bring craftsmanship back to construction.
