shaker trace nursery
emersion DESIGN and Great Parks of Hamilton County are working together to modernize facilities at the Shaker Trace Seed Nursery in Miami Whitewater Forest. The nursery specializes in preserving the ecological and genetic integrity of the region through native plant propagation of local genotypes. The comprehensive design – informed by interactive and in-depth interviews – increases the facility’s capacity to support Great Parks’ conservation mission, to improve seasonal operational flows, and accommodate future program needs, while also expanding the nursery’s role in educating the community about native plants, ecology, and restoration. The project includes restoration of a 100-year old drying barn, a new greenhouse, and a new storage building. The project demonstrates sustainable practices and is pursuing Net Zero Energy through reduced footprints, targeted EUI design on the envelope and HVAC systems, and on-site solar offsets.
