Clifton Cultural Arts Center (CCAC) is a non-profit arts organization and is an essential hub for diversity, community, and creativity. Like the organization itself, the design process was rooted in collaboration and imagination. Input sessions with patrons and neighbors determined that the design needed to blend in with the neighborhood’s setting and reflect the welcoming and artistic spirit that both Clifton and CCAC exemplify. Careful zoning analysis and cooperative agreements with neighbors optimized the constrained site. The exterior facade embodies a contemporary interpretation of Clifton’s historic masonry with windows that span 3 floors on the corner and offer views into the main art gallery at the street front. The small square footage makes a big impact with bright interior spaces that let the vibrancy of the art, people and activities be the focus. The main areas easily transform for multiple uses – the two-story art gallery hosts yoga sessions, the theater shifts to salsa class or choir practice, and classrooms pivot daily from visual arts to dance rooms. The rooftop offers distinctive views of the city for receptions, outdoor classes, and performances. These flexible features along with an efficient footprint and high building performance will allow CCAC to adapt and serve its community well into the future.
