emersion DESIGN is the lead designer on the design-build team transforming the historic YMCA building into The Why, a vibrant new student destination at the University of Cincinnati. The project reimagines this landmark campus facility as a welcoming hub for connection, creativity, wellness, and community while preserving its historic character. Designed to support belonging and holistic well-being, The Why will feature active social spaces, quiet reflection areas, a student-run café, sensory rooms, and flexible environments that adapt to evolving student needs. Universal accessibility, safety, and sustainability are central to the design, aligning with the University’s commitment to equity and environmental stewardship.
